Which Nigerian author wrote 'Things Fall Apart'?

The story behind the answer

Chinua Achebe wrote 'Things Fall Apart'. The 1958 novel was Achebe's debut and is set among the Igbo people of colonial Nigeria, focusing on Okonkwo, an influential leader whose life is destabilized by personal tragedy, Christian missionaries, and British colonial rule.

Achebe wrote the novel while working for the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. He chose its title from W. B. Yeats's 1919 poem 'The Second Coming', whose line about things falling apart reflects the novel's political and cultural upheaval. Heinemann published the book in London on 17 June 1958.

The novel is often described as a landmark of modern African literature because it presents precolonial Igbo society in complex detail rather than allowing European colonial narratives to define it. A common mix-up is confusing Achebe with other major Nigerian writers such as Wole Soyinka or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Achebe later followed the novel with 'No Longer at Ease' and 'Arrow of God', completing what is often called his African Trilogy.
