Which NHL team won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021?

The story behind the answer

The Tampa Bay Lightning won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. They defeated the Dallas Stars in the 2020 Final and the Montreal Canadiens in the 2021 Final.

Tampa Bay’s first championship came in the pandemic-delayed 2019–20 season. The Lightning beat Dallas four games to two in the Edmonton bubble. The following season, they faced Montreal and won the Final four games to one, clinching the title at home on July 7, 2021, with a 1–0 victory in Game 5. Ross Colton scored the only goal, and Andrei Vasilevskiy recorded the shutout.

The repeat made Tampa Bay the first back-to-back champion since the Pittsburgh Penguins won in 2016 and 2017. It was also the third championship in franchise history, following the club’s first title in 2004. A common mix-up is the Colorado Avalanche: Colorado won consecutive Cups in 2021–22 and 2022–23 was not a championship season, whereas Tampa’s consecutive titles were specifically 2020 and 2021.
