Which NHL team is based in Detroit?

The story behind the answer

Which NHL team is based in Detroit? The answer is the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings joined the NHL in 1926 as the Detroit Cougars, later becoming the Detroit Falcons before adopting the Red Wings name in 1932. The name was inspired partly by Detroit’s earlier amateur hockey club, the Winged Wheelers.

Detroit is one of the NHL’s Original Six franchises, the six teams that made up the league from 1942 until expansion in 1967. The Red Wings have won the Stanley Cup 11 times, with their most recent championship coming in 2008.

A common mix-up is confusing Detroit with Chicago, another Original Six team in the Central Division. Detroit’s home arena is Little Caesars Arena, which opened in 2017 in downtown Detroit.
