Which NHL team hosted the first Winter Classic outdoor game?

The Buffalo Sabres hosted the first NHL Winter Classic. The inaugural game was played on January 1, 2008, at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, with the Sabres facing the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The game was designed as a New Year’s Day outdoor showcase, placing an NHL rink inside an NFL stadium. Buffalo was selected because the Sabres were willing to take the risk of staging a regular-season game outdoors, and the team’s fans embraced the event. More than 71,000 spectators attended despite cold, snow and difficult conditions.

Pittsburgh won 2–1 in a shootout. Colby Armstrong scored first for the Penguins, Brian Campbell tied the game for Buffalo, and Sidney Crosby scored the deciding shootout goal. The result helped turn the Winter Classic into one of the NHL’s signature annual events.

The common confusion is with the first NHL outdoor game overall. That was the 2003 Heritage Classic in Edmonton, while the Buffalo–Pittsburgh game was the first event specifically branded the Winter Classic.
