Which NFL team finished the 1972 season with a perfect record?

The story behind the answer

The Miami Dolphins finished the 1972 season with a perfect record, winning all 17 games from the regular season through the playoffs. They remain the only NFL team to complete a season undefeated and untied.

Miami went 14–0 during the regular season under head coach Don Shula, then defeated the Cleveland Browns in the divisional playoffs and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. In Super Bowl VII on January 14, 1973, the Dolphins beat Washington 14–7 to complete the 17–0 season. Their defense, famously nicknamed the “No-Name Defense,” held Washington to one touchdown and allowed only 14 points in the Super Bowl.

The 1972 team is sometimes described as having the only perfect season in professional football, but that requires context: the 1948 Cleveland Browns also went undefeated in the All-America Football Conference, which was not the NFL. The 2007 New England Patriots reached the Super Bowl unbeaten but lost there to the New York Giants.
