Which Newton, Massachusetts hill is famous in the Boston Marathon?

The story behind the answer

Heartbreak Hill is the famous Newton, Massachusetts hill on the Boston Marathon course.

The climb appears late in the race, after runners have already covered much of the distance. It is the final major ascent of the Boston course and is located near Boston College on Commonwealth Avenue. The hill is part of a series of Newton hills that test runners before the route descends toward Boston.

The name became associated with the 1936 Boston Marathon. Race leader John A. Kelley reportedly patted defending champion Ellison “Tarzan” Brown on the shoulder as he passed him on the hill; Brown then surged away to win, breaking Kelley’s heart.

Heartbreak Hill is demanding but not the course’s highest point. Its fame comes from its late position, its steepness, and the race history attached to it.
