Which newspaper first published the United States Declaration of Independence?

The story behind the answer

The Pennsylvania Evening Post first published the United States Declaration of Independence in a newspaper on July 6, 1776.

Benjamin Towne published the paper in Philadelphia, where the Second Continental Congress was meeting. The Declaration appeared on the front page of the July 6 issue, only two days after Congress adopted the document.

The newspaper had begun publication in January 1775 and initially appeared three times a week. It later became the first daily newspaper published in the United States, making it an important part of the early nation’s developing political press.

The first newspaper printing was not the document’s first public appearance. John Dunlap had printed broadsides of the Declaration shortly after Congress approved it, and public readings followed in Philadelphia, Trenton, and Easton on July 8. The newspaper printing helped circulate the text to a wider reading audience.
