Which newspaper first published the Declaration of Independence, now recalled by America250?

The story behind the answer

The Pennsylvania Evening Post first published the Declaration of Independence, now recalled by America250.

The newspaper printed the document on July 6, 1776, two days after the Second Continental Congress adopted it. This was the first newspaper publication of the Declaration, allowing readers beyond Philadelphia and Congress to encounter the announcement of independence.

The text also circulated through printed broadsides. John Dunlap printed roughly 200 copies shortly after adoption, producing what are now known as Dunlap broadsides. These copies were distributed throughout the colonies and to military leaders.

The Pennsylvania Evening Post should not be confused with the Pennsylvania Gazette, a different Philadelphia newspaper associated with Benjamin Franklin. The Declaration’s first newspaper appearance was also earlier than its first public readings on July 8.
