Which newspaper first published the Declaration of Independence, a document central to America250?
Answer
The Pennsylvania Evening Post
Answer
The Pennsylvania Evening Post
The Pennsylvania Evening Post first published the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776.
The newspaper printed the document two days after the Second Continental Congress approved its final wording. This early publication helped circulate the Declaration beyond the delegates who had debated it in Philadelphia.
The printed version was not the same physical object as the engrossed parchment now displayed at the National Archives. Printer John Dunlap produced an earlier broadside edition, commonly called a Dunlap broadside, which was distributed widely after adoption. The Pennsylvania Evening Post then provided an important newspaper publication for readers.
The first public readings followed on July 8, 1776, in Philadelphia, Trenton, New Jersey, and Easton, Pennsylvania. These readings and newspaper publications transformed a congressional resolution into a public announcement explaining why the colonies claimed independence from Great Britain.
