Auckland is the New Zealand city known for New Year's Eve fireworks launched from the Sky Tower.
The Sky Tower stands in central Auckland and is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Its height makes it a prominent focal point for the city's midnight celebrations and allows fireworks to be seen across much of the urban area.
The tower opened in 1997 as part of the SkyCity entertainment complex. It rises 328 metres above the ground and includes observation levels, restaurants, and communications facilities.
Auckland's display is sometimes described as one of the first major city fireworks shows of the calendar year because New Zealand lies near the International Date Line. The city is not the same place as Wellington, New Zealand's capital.
