The Sky Tower stands in central Auckland at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, within the SkyCity Auckland complex. At 328 metres from ground level to the top of its mast, it dominates the city's skyline and is one of New Zealand's most recognizable structures.

Construction began in 1994, and the tower opened to the public on 3 August 1997. It was designed as a telecommunications and observation tower, with public viewing areas, restaurants and attractions in its upper sections. Visitors can look across Auckland's volcanic landscape, harbour and surrounding islands from the observation decks.

The tower is sometimes confused with landmarks in Wellington or Christchurch, but neither city has the Sky Tower. Queenstown is famous for its alpine scenery and adventure tourism, while Wellington is New Zealand's capital. Auckland is the country's largest urban area and sits around the Waitematā Harbour, making the tower's location especially prominent.

The Sky Tower was the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere from 1996 until 2022.
