Which New York Stock Exchange trading day in 1929 is known as Black Tuesday?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange occurred on October 29, 1929. The session saw about 16 million shares change hands, a record at the time, as investors rushed to sell stocks.

The crash followed years of speculative buying, widespread use of borrowed money, and signs that the U.S. economy was weakening. October 24, later called Black Thursday, brought an earlier panic, while October 28, Black Monday, and October 29 produced even heavier selling.

The 1929 crash did not by itself create the Great Depression, but it badly damaged confidence and helped deepen an international economic downturn. Stock prices continued falling after October, reaching a major low in 1932.

A common mix-up is treating Black Tuesday as the entire crash. It was the most famous single day in the sequence, not the only day on which the market collapsed.
