Which New York museum opened in 1929 and is commonly called MoMA?

The story behind the answer

The New York museum that opened in 1929 and is commonly called MoMA is the Museum of Modern Art.

MoMA was founded by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, and Mary Quinn Sullivan, and opened on November 7, 1929, shortly after the Wall Street crash. Its first location was in rented rooms in the Heckscher Building on Fifth Avenue. The museum later moved several times before settling at 11 West 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan.

MoMA helped make modern art central to American museum culture. Its holdings span painting, sculpture, photography, film, design, architecture, and illustrated books. Famous works in its collection include Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night and Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.

A common mix-up is confusing MoMA with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The Guggenheim opened in 1959 and is especially associated with its Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building; the Whitney Museum focuses heavily on American art.
