Which New York City park is the Met located next to?

The story behind the answer

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located next to Central Park in Manhattan.

The Met’s main building, often called The Met Fifth Avenue, occupies a prominent stretch along Fifth Avenue at roughly East 80th through East 84th Streets. Its address is 1000 Fifth Avenue, directly beside the park’s eastern edge. The museum’s position is one reason visitors often combine a trip to its galleries with a walk through Central Park.

The relationship dates to the Met’s move to its present site. In 1871, New York City granted the museum land between Fifth Avenue, the park’s East Drive, and the 79th and 85th Street transverse roads. The original building opened in 1880, and later expansions gradually created the enormous complex seen today.

A common mix-up is The Cloisters, another Met branch. It is not beside Central Park: it is in Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan. Prospect Park is in Brooklyn, while Madison Square Park and Bryant Park are smaller Manhattan parks farther south.
