Which New York City neighborhood was transformed from rail yards into a major mixed-use development beginning in 2009?

The story behind the answer

Hudson Yards is the New York City neighborhood transformed from rail yards into a major mixed-use development beginning in 2009.

The Hudson Yards project covers a large area on Manhattan’s West Side above the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s West Side Yard. Its development required platforms over active rail infrastructure, allowing buildings, streets, parks, and public spaces to be constructed without removing the rail yard below.

Construction on the first major phase began in 2012, following years of planning, infrastructure work, and zoning changes. The development includes offices, apartments, hotels, shops, cultural venues, schools, and public open space. The first phase opened in 2019, bringing a new business and residential district to an area that had previously been dominated by rail facilities and industrial uses.

Hudson Yards is sometimes confused with Battery Park City, another large Manhattan development created on a former industrial and transportation site. Battery Park City, however, is on the island’s southern tip and has a separate history.
