Macy’s began sponsoring the annual Independence Day tradition during the United States bicentennial in 1976. That first bicentennial show was staged in Upper New York Bay, with fireworks launched from barges and locations including Ellis Island, Governors Island, and Liberty Island. The event later moved among the Hudson River, East River, and other New York-area locations.

The display is sometimes confused with Liberty Weekend fireworks, but Macy’s did not host the 1986 show because that year’s fireworks were part of the Statue of Liberty centennial celebration. The Macy’s event returned as a regular annual tradition afterward. It was first televised in 1983, syndicated nationally in 1991, and moved to NBC in 2000, where its broadcast has continued.
