Which New York City building was the Times Square Ball first lowered from in 1907?
Answer
One Times Square
Answer
One Times Square
The first Times Square Ball was lowered from One Times Square in 1907.
One Times Square was built as the headquarters of The New York Times and helped give the surrounding district its name. The newspaper moved into the building in 1904, and the city renamed Longacre Square as Times Square in connection with that move. The first New Year's Eve celebration at the site used fireworks, but a ball drop was introduced three years later.
The original ball was lowered from a flagpole atop the building shortly before midnight on December 31, 1907. Its descent gave crowds a visible signal for the change of year and created a format that could be repeated annually.
One Times Square has since become more associated with giant electronic advertising displays than with newspaper offices. The ball drop, however, remains tied to the building even as the technology, lighting, and crystal designs have evolved. The modern ceremony still uses the same basic rooftop-to-midnight idea.
