Which New York City building is the Times Square Ball lowered from each New Year's Eve?

The story behind the answer

The Times Square Ball is lowered from One Times Square each New Year's Eve.

One Times Square is the tall, wedge-shaped building at the southern end of Times Square in Manhattan. It was built for The New York Times and opened in 1904, when the surrounding area took the newspaper's name. Although the newspaper later moved away, the building retained its symbolic importance.

The ball descends a flagpole mounted near the roof, giving spectators a clear view from the surrounding streets and public broadcast locations. The building's large electronic advertising displays now cover much of its exterior, making it one of New York's most recognizable illuminated landmarks.

People sometimes say the ball drops from the Empire State Building because that skyscraper is New York's best-known tower. The Empire State Building is not the site of the Times Square Ball drop.
