Which New York City borough includes Liberty Island? Manhattan.
Liberty Island is part of the borough of Manhattan, although it sits in Upper New York Bay close to New Jersey and is often visually associated with the New Jersey shore. The island was formerly called Bedloe’s Island; Congress officially renamed it Liberty Island in 1956.
The island’s unusual location can cause confusion. An 1834 agreement placed the New York–New Jersey boundary through the bay, but the original islands, including Liberty Island, remained New York territory. Reclaimed portions of nearby Ellis Island are treated differently and belong to New Jersey.
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, as a gift from France to the United States. Today, Liberty Island and Ellis Island form the Statue of Liberty National Monument, administered by the National Park Service. Visitors reach the island by ferry from both Manhattan and New Jersey, but ferry departure points do not determine the island’s borough.
