Which New York City borough contains Times Square, the site of the famous New Year’s Eve countdown?

The story behind the answer

Times Square, the site of New York City’s famous New Year’s Eve countdown, is in Manhattan.

Times Square is a major commercial intersection in Midtown Manhattan, where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street. The annual countdown takes place at One Times Square, the building from which the illuminated ball descends at midnight.

The area was known as Longacre Square until 1904, when it was renamed Times Square after The New York Times moved its headquarters there. The newspaper later relocated, but the name remained and the district developed into a global center for theaters, advertising, tourism, and public celebrations.

New York City has five boroughs, so the event is sometimes incorrectly assigned to Brooklyn or Queens simply because those boroughs are also prominent. Manhattan is the borough containing the central Midtown site and One Times Square.
