The Rose Parade takes place annually in Pasadena, California, on January 1.
Officially called the Tournament of Roses Parade, it is organized by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. The parade is famous for floats decorated with natural materials such as flowers, seeds, bark, and leaves, alongside marching bands and equestrian units.
The first parade was held in 1890. Its organizers used a floral procession to promote Pasadena’s mild winter climate, contrasting it with colder regions of the United States. The event later became closely connected with the Rose Bowl college football game, although the parade and game are separate programs.
When January 1 falls on a Sunday, the parade is held on January 2 under the event’s “Never on Sunday” rule. That scheduling detail prevents confusion with the usual date and is one reason the parade is not always seen on January 1.
