Which New Year's Eve parade in Pasadena, California, is traditionally held on January 1?

The story behind the answer

The Rose Parade is Pasadena, California’s famous New Year celebration traditionally held on January 1.

Officially called the Tournament of Roses Parade, it features flower-covered floats, marching bands, and equestrian units traveling along Colorado Boulevard. The event is organized by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.

The first parade took place in 1890, when members of Pasadena’s Valley Hunt Club presented decorated horse-drawn carriages to showcase Southern California’s mild winter climate. The event later grew into a nationally televised spectacle.

Although it is commonly described as a New Year’s Day parade, it is not always held on January 1. The parade follows a “Never on Sunday” rule, so when January 1 falls on a Sunday, it takes place on Monday, January 2. It is also linked with the Rose Bowl college football game, but the parade and game are separate events.
