Which New Year's Eve event is known for the Waterford Crystal Times Square Ball in New York?

The story behind the answer

The Times Square Ball Drop is the New Year's Eve event known for the Waterford Crystal Times Square Ball in New York.

Waterford Crystal became associated with the ball in 2000, when the millennium celebration introduced a new design made with crystal panels. Later designs expanded the number and arrangement of panels, while LED lighting allowed the sphere to display complex color patterns. The ball is raised to the top of One Times Square before its descent.

The event's roots reach back to 1907, when the newspaper The New York Times organized a celebration after moving into the building then known as Times Tower. The current structure is not the original ball: early versions were much smaller and used iron and wood. “Ball drop” can refer to other local countdowns, but the Waterford Crystal association specifically identifies the Times Square tradition.
