Which New Year's Eve event in New York City began in 1907 at One Times Square?

The story behind the answer

The New Year’s Eve event that began in 1907 at One Times Square is the Times Square Ball Drop.

The first ball descended on December 31, 1907, at the headquarters of The New York Times. Publisher Adolph Ochs wanted a dramatic public celebration to mark the newspaper’s new home and draw attention to the renamed Times Square. The ball drop became an annual tradition and has continued, with interruptions during wartime blackouts in 1942 and 1943.

The event is sometimes confused with a parade because Times Square hosts many public gatherings, but the ball drop itself is a timed descent of an illuminated sphere. The first ball was much smaller and simpler than the modern design. Today, the celebration features musical performances, crowds, security restrictions, and a crystal-and-LED ball that is lowered during the final minute. One Times Square remains the historic site even though the surrounding district and the ball’s technology have changed repeatedly.
