Which New Year's Eve concert takes place annually at Vienna's Musikverein?

The story behind the answer

The annual New Year’s Eve concert at Vienna’s Musikverein is the Vienna New Year’s Concert.

Despite its name, the famous performance takes place on New Year’s Day, January 1, rather than on the evening of December 31. It is performed by the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein’s Golden Hall and is broadcast internationally.

The program centers on music by the Strauss family and related composers, especially waltzes, polkas, and marches. The Radetzky March traditionally invites the audience to clap along, although the conductor controls the tempo and participation.

The concert’s history reaches back to a 1939 performance conducted by Clemens Krauss. The modern annual New Year’s Day tradition developed after World War II. A separate New Year’s Eve concert is also performed, but the globally televised January 1 event is the best-known one.
