Which New Year's Eve concert is held annually at Vienna's Musikverein and broadcast internationally?

The story behind the answer

The annual concert held at Vienna's Musikverein and broadcast internationally is the Vienna New Year's Concert.

The concert is performed by the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein's Golden Hall. Its program centers on music by the Strauss family, especially Johann Strauss II, and also includes works by other composers connected with the Viennese dance tradition. Waltzes and polkas give the event its characteristic sound.

The first concert took place on December 31, 1939, during the Second World War. It moved to New Year's Day in 1941, and the New Year's Day broadcast became the best-known format. Although the concert is popularly linked with New Year's Eve, the main performance is now held on January 1, with additional performances on December 30 and December 31.

The Radetzky March is traditionally played as an encore, with the audience clapping along. Its inclusion is a custom of the concert, not the title of the concert itself.
