Santa Fe became Georgia O'Keeffe's home and the site of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and later made the region a major source of subjects for her art.
She moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died. O'Keeffe lived and worked in Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch, while Santa Fe became an important nearby cultural center. Her paintings of desert hills, adobe buildings, flowers, animal bones, and the area's intense light became central to her public identity.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in Santa Fe in 1997, eleven years after the artist's death. Santa Fe is sometimes confused with Taos because both are major New Mexico art destinations, but the museum itself is in Santa Fe.
