Which New Jack Swing producer formed the group Guy in 1987?

The story behind the answer

Which New Jack Swing producer formed the group Guy in 1987? Teddy Riley formed Guy with Aaron Hall and Timmy Gatling.

Riley, a Harlem-born musician and producer, helped establish New Jack Swing by combining R&B vocals with hip-hop rhythms, programmed drums, and funk-influenced production. Guy became one of the movement’s signature groups, alongside Riley’s later project Blackstreet.

Guy released its self-titled debut album in 1988 through Uptown and MCA Records. Singles such as “Groove Me,” “Teddy’s Jam,” and “I Like” made the group a major force on the R&B charts, and the album eventually achieved double-platinum status.

The original lineup changed soon after the debut was recorded: Timmy Gatling left, and Aaron Hall’s brother Damion Hall joined the group. That personnel change can cause confusion, but Riley remained the producer and founding musical force. Guy later released The Future in 1990 and reunited periodically.
