Which Nepenthes species is the only pitcher plant found in the Seychelles?
Answer
Nepenthes pervillei
Answer
Nepenthes pervillei
The only pitcher plant found in the Seychelles is Nepenthes pervillei.
This species is endemic to the Seychelles islands of Mahé and Silhouette. It grows mainly in rocky upland habitats near granitic mountain summits, where its roots can extend into deep fissures in the rock. Its known elevation range is approximately 350 to 750 metres.
Nepenthes pervillei is a true pitcher plant: its modified leaves form fluid-filled traps that attract and digest animal prey. Like other Nepenthes species, it is dioecious, meaning individual plants are generally either male or female. Mites have also been recorded living inside its pitchers.
The species name honors Auguste Pervillé, a French plant collector. It has sometimes been discussed as unusually primitive within Nepenthes because its seeds lack the characteristic tails found in most related species. Although it was once placed in the separate genus Anurosperma, modern taxonomic treatments generally return it to Nepenthes.
