Wellington Arch is a triumphal arch by architect Decimus Burton, built between 1826 and 1830 as part of a ceremonial approach to Buckingham Palace. It originally stood opposite Burton’s Ionic Screen at Hyde Park Corner, marking the entrance to Green Park and the route toward the palace.

The arch was created during a major 1820s improvement scheme commissioned under George IV, celebrating Britain’s victories in the Napoleonic Wars. It was first associated with an equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington, installed in 1846 despite strong criticism of its size and appearance.

Traffic pressures led to the arch being dismantled and rebuilt near the top of Constitution Hill in 1882–1883. Wellington’s statue was not moved with it. Since 1912, the summit has carried Adrian Jones’s bronze Quadriga, showing Nike, the winged goddess of victory, driving a four-horse chariot.

Marble Arch is the common mix-up: it was also planned for the Buckingham Palace approach, but it now stands near Hyde Park’s northeastern corner.
