Which Nazi camp was the site of the 1944 medical experiments associated with Josef Mengele?
Answer
Auschwitz-Birkenau
Answer
Auschwitz-Birkenau
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the Nazi camp where Josef Mengele conducted or supervised many of the medical experiments associated with him.
Mengele arrived at Auschwitz in May 1943 and served as an SS physician. He carried out selections of arriving prisoners, determining who would be sent to forced labor and who would be murdered immediately. He also conducted research involving twins, children, people with unusual physical characteristics, and other prisoners.
The experiments were performed without consent and caused immense suffering and death. Mengele fled Auschwitz in January 1945 as Soviet forces approached, later escaping to South America. He died in Brazil in 1979 without facing trial. Other Nazi camps, including Dachau and Ravensbrück, also saw abusive medical experiments, but Auschwitz-Birkenau is most closely associated with Mengele.
