Which Nazi camp was the main destination for deportees from the Drancy camp in France?

The story behind the answer

Auschwitz-Birkenau was the main destination for Jewish deportees sent from the Drancy camp in France.

Drancy, northeast of Paris, became the principal French internment and transit camp for Jews arrested by French and German authorities. From 1941 to 1944, prisoners were held there before being transported east in deportation convoys. Most Jewish deportees from France were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where many were murdered soon after arrival.

The camp was initially a housing complex, but German authorities converted it into an internment center during the occupation. French police helped conduct major roundups, including the Vel' d'Hiv roundup in July 1942. Drancy’s location beside a railway made it useful for organizing deportation trains.

The site is now a memorial and museum. Drancy should not be confused with a Nazi extermination camp: it was primarily a transit and internment camp, while Auschwitz-Birkenau was the principal killing destination for many of its prisoners.
