Which nationality was Georges Braque?

Georges Braque was French.

Born in Argenteuil, France, on 13 May 1882, Braque grew up in Le Havre and initially trained as a house painter and decorator, following his family’s trade. He later studied art and moved into avant-garde painting, first adopting the vivid colors and simplified forms associated with Fauvism.

Braque became one of Cubism’s principal innovators. His 1908 landscapes of L’Estaque reduced houses and hills to geometric structures, while his close collaboration with Pablo Picasso helped develop both Analytic and Synthetic Cubism. Because Picasso was Spanish and the two artists worked so closely together, Braque’s nationality is sometimes overlooked.

Braque was not merely a follower of Picasso: art historians generally describe Cubism as a joint development by the French Braque and the Spanish Picasso. Braque also invented the papier collé technique in 1912, an important early form of collage. He died in Paris on 31 August 1963.
