Germany won the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which was held in Brazil.
Germany defeated Argentina 1–0 in the final at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on July 13, 2014. The only goal came in extra time, when substitute Mario Götze scored in the 113th minute after controlling André Schürrle’s cross.
The victory gave Germany its fourth men’s World Cup title, following championships in 1954, 1974, and 1990. It was also the first World Cup won by Germany since reunification; earlier titles were won by West Germany. Germany became the first European team to win the tournament in South America.
The semifinal made the tournament especially memorable: Germany defeated host nation Brazil 7–1 in Belo Horizonte. That result was one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history. Argentina, not Brazil or Spain, was Germany’s final opponent, while Spain had been eliminated in the group stage after winning the previous World Cup in 2010.
