Some dunes exceed 200 meters, and Big Daddy reaches roughly 325 meters, making the area one of Namibia’s most recognizable landscapes.

The park stretches between the Atlantic coast and the Great Escarpment and includes parts of the Namib Desert, the Naukluft Mountains, and Sandwich Harbour. It was established in 1907 and covers nearly 49,768 square kilometres, making it one of Africa’s largest protected areas.

Sossusvlei is not itself a national park; it is a landmark within Namib-Naukluft. Deadvlei, nearby, is another clay pan known for its dark, dead camelthorn trees against a white floor and vivid dunes. The name Sossusvlei combines Nama and Afrikaans elements and roughly means “dead-end marsh.”
