Poás Volcano National Park is the Costa Rican national park home to the active Poás Volcano.

Poás is an active stratovolcano in Costa Rica’s Cordillera Central, rising to about 2,697 metres. Its summit area contains large volcanic craters, including the acidic Laguna Caliente, whose chemistry changes with rainfall and volcanic activity. The volcano’s persistent fumarolic activity and eruptive history make it one of the country’s best-known living volcanic systems.

The protected area was created in 1955 and covers cloud forest and other high-elevation habitats around the volcano. Visitors traditionally come to the crater overlook, although access can be restricted when gas emissions, eruptions or other hazards increase. The park was closed for an extended period after the strong April 2017 eruption and later reopened with controlled visitation.
