Which national cemetery contains the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a major site of Memorial Day remembrance?

The story behind the answer

Arlington National Cemetery contains the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a major site of Memorial Day remembrance.

The cemetery is in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. It was established during the Civil War on grounds associated with Arlington House, the former home of Robert E. Lee and his family.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated in 1921 for an unidentified American service member from World War I. Unknown service members from World War II and the Korean War were later interred there, while a Vietnam War unknown was later identified through DNA analysis.

Arlington also hosted the first national Decoration Day ceremony in 1868. The cemetery therefore connects the holiday’s earliest nationwide observance with one of the country’s most prominent modern military memorials.
