The Bicentennial comes immediately before the United States Semiquincentennial in the sequence of major national milestones.
The Bicentennial marked the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1976. The Semiquincentennial marks the 250th anniversary in 2026, exactly 50 years later.
Earlier milestones include the Centennial in 1876 and the Sesquicentennial in 1926. The next milestone after 2026 is the Tricentennial, which would mark 300 years in 2076.
The word “bicentennial” means a 200-year anniversary. It should not be confused with “sesquicentennial,” which means 150 years, or “centennial,” which means 100 years.
