Which NASA mission was the last crewed mission to land on the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 17 was the last NASA mission to land a crew on the Moon.

Launched on December 7, 1972, Apollo 17 carried astronauts Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmitt, and Ronald Evans. Cernan and Schmitt landed in the Taurus–Littrow valley, while Evans remained in lunar orbit in the command module America.

The mission conducted three lunar surface excursions, totaling more than 22 hours outside the lunar module Challenger. Schmitt was the only professional geologist to walk on the Moon, and the crew collected about 110 kilograms of lunar material, including the famous orange soil sample.

Apollo 17 is sometimes confused with Apollo 16, the previous lunar landing mission, or Apollo 18, a mission that was canceled. No crewed lunar landing has followed Apollo 17.
