Apollo 11 was the NASA mission that first landed humans on the Moon, on July 20, 1969.
The mission launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969, with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin aboard. Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the lunar module Eagle, while Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia.
Apollo 11 landed in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface, followed shortly afterward by Aldrin. The astronauts collected lunar samples, deployed scientific equipment, and returned safely to Earth on July 24.
Apollo 8 had previously carried humans around the Moon but did not land. Apollo 10 tested the landing procedures in lunar orbit, making Apollo 11 the mission that completed the first crewed lunar landing.
