The Cassini–Huygens mission delivered the Huygens probe to Saturn’s moon Titan, where it landed in 2005.
NASA’s Cassini orbiter launched on October 15, 1997, carrying the European Space Agency’s Huygens lander. The spacecraft reached Saturn in July 2004 after a journey of nearly seven years. On December 25, 2004, Cassini released Huygens toward Titan.
Huygens entered Titan’s atmosphere on January 14, 2005, and became the first spacecraft to land on a world in the outer Solar System. It returned images and measurements during its descent and continued transmitting data from Titan’s surface for about 90 minutes.
The mission is sometimes called Cassini, but Cassini was the orbiter while Huygens was the lander. Together, they conducted the first detailed exploration of Saturn, its rings, and its moons. Cassini ended on September 15, 2017, when it was deliberately sent into Saturn’s atmosphere.
