Mercury-Redstone 3
Answer
Mercury-Redstone 3
NASA’s Mercury-Redstone 3 mission carried Alan Shepard on the first U.S. human spaceflight in 1961.
Launched on May 5, 1961, the mission used a Redstone rocket and the Freedom 7 spacecraft. Shepard’s suborbital flight lasted about 15 minutes and reached an altitude of approximately 187 kilometers. He became the first American in space, although Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin had already completed the first human orbital flight aboard Vostok 1.
Mercury-Redstone 3 is often called Freedom 7 after Shepard’s capsule, so both names can appear in historical references. It was not an orbital mission: the spacecraft followed a high ballistic arc before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean.
The flight demonstrated that a human could be launched, perform basic spacecraft tasks, and safely return. John Glenn later became the first American to orbit Earth, on Mercury-Atlas 6 in February 1962.
