Answer
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the C.S. Lewis Narnia book in which a wardrobe leads to another world.
The 1950 novel follows the four Pevensie children—Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy—after they are sent away from wartime London. Lucy discovers that the back of a wardrobe opens into Narnia, a land trapped in winter under the rule of the White Witch.
The wardrobe was inspired in part by Lewis’s interest in imaginative transformation and by an image he had carried in his mind of a faun carrying an umbrella and parcels through a snowy wood. The story introduces major figures including Aslan, Mr. Tumnus, and the White Witch.
Although the book is often called the first Narnia story, Lewis later wrote The Magician’s Nephew, which gives the fictional world’s origin. That distinction explains why publication order and chronological order are not identical.
