Answer
Tropic of Capricorn
Which named latitude circle lies at about 23.5 degrees south? The answer is the Tropic of Capricorn.
It is one of Earth’s five major circles of latitude and marks the southernmost latitude where the Sun can appear directly overhead. This occurs at the December solstice, when the Southern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun. Its present position is about 23°26′ south, though it slowly shifts because Earth’s axial tilt changes.
The name comes from the constellation Capricornus: when the line was named, the Sun appeared in that constellation during the December solstice. Because of precession, the Sun now appears in Sagittarius at that time, but the traditional name remains.
A common mix-up is confusing it with the Tropic of Cancer, its Northern Hemisphere counterpart. The Antarctic Circle is much farther south, near 66.5°S, and marks the latitude where polar day and night begin.
