Prometheus warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus. His warning was ignored, allowing Pandora to enter Epimetheus’s household and the jar’s story to unfold.
Prometheus and Epimetheus are brothers whose names create a deliberate contrast. Prometheus is associated with forethought, while Epimetheus is associated with afterthought. Prometheus understands that Zeus’s gift may conceal danger because he has already challenged Zeus by stealing fire for humanity.
In Hesiod’s account, Epimetheus accepts Pandora despite the warning. Pandora later opens the container, releasing the forces that explain human suffering. Prometheus’s advice therefore functions as a crucial turning point rather than a minor detail. Modern versions sometimes depict Pandora as acting entirely alone, but the ancient story includes the brothers’ relationship and Epimetheus’s decision. That context also explains why the myth’s characters have names connected to thinking ahead and recognizing consequences afterward.
