Beck won the 2015 Grammy Award for Album of the Year with Morning Phase.
Morning Phase was Beck’s twelfth studio album and was released in February 2014. It is often described as a reflective, atmospheric record with folk-rock and country-rock elements. The album was recorded partly with musicians who had worked with Beck on his 2002 album Sea Change, another introspective release frequently discussed alongside Morning Phase.
At the 57th Annual Grammy Awards on February 8, 2015, Morning Phase won Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. Beck’s Album of the Year victory surprised some viewers because major nominees included Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour and Beyoncé’s Beyoncé. A later pop-culture moment came when Kanye West briefly approached the stage during Beck’s acceptance, echoing an earlier awards-show incident involving West and Taylor Swift.
