Which musician is known as the 'Mambo King'?

The musician known as the “Mambo King” is Tito Puente. Born Ernest Anthony Puente Jr. in New York City in 1923, he became one of the most influential bandleaders, composers, and percussionists in mambo and Latin jazz.

Puente was especially celebrated for his timbales playing and was also called “El Rey de los Timbales,” or “The King of the Timbales.” During the 1950s, he helped bring mambo, cha-cha-chá, son, and related Afro-Cuban sounds to mainstream audiences. New York’s Palladium Ballroom, the famed “Home of the Mambo,” was central to that cultural moment.

His 1958 album Dance Mania is a landmark recording, and his composition “Oye Cómo Va” later became widely known through Carlos Santana’s rock interpretation. Tito Rodríguez and Pérez Prado were also major figures in mambo, which explains the common confusion, but “Mambo King” most specifically identifies Tito Puente.
