Which museum owns Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise?

The story behind the answer

The Musée Marmottan Monet owns Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise.

Monet painted Impression, Sunrise in 1872 while depicting the port of Le Havre, the city where he spent much of his childhood. The work shows a hazy orange sun, boats, and industrial forms emerging from blue-gray mist. Its loose treatment of atmosphere became central to the later identity of Impressionism.

The painting entered the collection of the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, which holds one of the world’s largest collections of Monet’s works. The museum’s name reflects its strong connection with the artist and his family’s bequests.

Visitors sometimes assume that Impression, Sunrise hangs at the Musée d’Orsay because that museum is famous for Impressionist art. The Musée d’Orsay does hold major Monet works, but this particular painting belongs to the Marmottan Monet collection.
