MAXXI—short for the National Museum of the 21st Century Arts, or Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo—is a contemporary art and architecture museum in Rome’s Flaminio district. The project was commissioned through an international competition, which Hadid won in 1998.

The building opened in stages, with MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture opening to the public in 2010. Its design uses sweeping concrete walls, intersecting galleries, ramps and dramatic roof lighting to create a building that feels more like a flowing urban landscape than a conventional box-shaped museum.

MAXXI is sometimes confused with Rome’s older museums, such as the Galleria Borghese and the Vatican Museums. Those institutions are famous for historic collections and Renaissance or Baroque settings; MAXXI was purpose-built for contemporary culture. Hadid’s work earned the project the 2010 RIBA European Award.
