Which Mozart opera premiered in Vienna in 1791 at the Theater auf der Wieden?

The story behind the answer

The Magic Flute premiered in Vienna in 1791 at the Theater auf der Wieden.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed this German-language opera, known as Die Zauberflöte, to a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. Schikaneder also managed the theatre and performed the role of Papageno in the first production. The premiere took place on 30 September 1791, only a few months before Mozart’s death.

The opera combines fairy-tale adventure, comedy, spoken dialogue, and Enlightenment symbolism. Its characters include Tamino, Pamina, Papageno, the Queen of the Night, and Sarastro. The famous coloratura aria “Der Hölle Rache” is sung by the Queen of the Night.

The Magic Flute is sometimes grouped with Mozart’s Italian comic operas, but it differs notably because its dialogue is in German and its format resembles a Singspiel. It became one of Mozart’s most frequently performed works.
